Heather Liberman VanDyke

I launched Javelina Legal in 2022 with a straightforward mission: to focus on the clients and projects I’m passionate about, and do it my way. In short order, I’ve had the honor to represent visionaries in the fields of music, entertainment, live experiences, professional sports and more. Convening, creating, and community are powerful concepts—it's continuously rewarding to prioritize those themes in my work.

Prior to Javelina, I cemented my skills in live events, performances and activations as the first General Counsel of South by Southwest Conference and Festivals (SXSW). For eight seasons I provided strategic leadership on a wide range of novel legal issues: copyright, trademark, privacy, risk management, insurance, safety, corporate, contracts—you name it, I did it.

In 2018, I designed and began teaching a seminar at the University of Texas School of Law, bringing my real-world experience into the classroom and using live events as a lens to explore core legal principles.

I originally sought out entertainment law because of my background as a professional modern dancer in NYC (albeit mostly on the off-off-off Broadway stages…). Then, after a stopover to intern for U.S. Senator Richard Durbin in Washington, DC, I went to law school.

In 2010, I had the opportunity to blend my performance experience with my legal training at a boutique entertainment and IP firm in Chicago where I represented artists and arts-focused businesses in both litigation and transactional matters.

Today, I live in Austin, Texas with my husband, daughter, and corgi.
